This homemade pasta sauce is so delicious and easy to make! It’s a savory and hearty meat sauce made with ground beef, tomato sauce, plenty of vegetables, herbs and spices. It's perfect for serving for a large family or packing for a potluck!
Heat a large pot on the stove over medium high heat. Add in olive oil and saute onions for about 5 minutes, until softened. Add in garlic and saute for another 30-60 seconds.
Add the sliced carrots and celery and saute until soft, about 5-10 minutes.
Add the ground beef and saute on high heat until brown, about 10-15 minutes.
Add the mushrooms and saute, about 1-2 minutes.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, bay leaf, sugar and parmesan cheese. Mix well. Bring to a simmer on medium heat.
Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 hour covered with a lid.

Serve with spaghetti pasta and top with fresh basil, red chili pepper flakes, additional grated Parmesan cheese and a few cracks of ground pepper.
After cooking your pasta, make sure to reserve ¼ cup of pasta water. Adding some of the salty and starchy pasta water to the pasta sauce will help it thicken and stick to your spaghetti better!
If the sauce tastes too acidic, add additional sugar to taste.
