    4 Ingredients

Ingredients on table ; tuna, cheddar cheese, noodles and cream of mushroom.

    1. Egg noodles - are my go to but here are some other noodle options like elbow pasta, fusilli pasta, and rotini will work for this dish.

    2. Canned Cream of Mushroom – This adds a rich, creamy, and savory flavor. For the best results, use condensed cream.

    Other great alternatives include:

    • Condensed cream of chicken
    • Condensed cream of celery
    • Milk (for a lighter option)

    3. Canned Tuna – canned albacore tuna has a mild flavor and firm texture, but any canned tuna will work. Take your pick between canned tuna in water or oil is.

    4. Cheddar Cheese – Adding cheese not only enhances the flavor with extra umami but also helps keep the casserole moist and creamy.

If you want to switch up the cheese in your tuna casserole, here are some great options:

    • Mozzarella
    • Parmesan
    • Monterey Jack
    • Colby Jack
    • Swiss
    • Gouda
    • Pepper Jack

(Optional) Vegetables - for extra nutrients and flavor try adding

    • frozen peas
    • frozen carrots
    • mushrooms
    • spinach
    • Broccolli
    • chopped celery

    (Optional) For Crunchy Toppings try:

    • Crushed potato chips
    • Buttery breadcrumbs
    • French fried onions
    • Crushed crackers (like Ritz or saltines)

    Instructions

What to serve with tuna casserole?

Lighter dishes will pair well with a savory tuna casserole dish. Some ideas are:

    Orzo broccoli salad

    Red beet and cucumber salad

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my tuna casserole so dry?

The casserole may not have enough moisture from the soup or cheese.  Using extra condensed soup or adding a splash of milk can help. Also, avoid overbaking, as this can dry it out.

Do tuna casseroles cook better covered or uncovered?

For this 4 ingredient recipe, baking it uncovered allows the cheesy top to crisp up and get golden brown.

Is it better to put tuna in water or oil for casserole?

This depends on personal taste and dietary  preference:
For a richer flavor and extra fat, use tuna in oil. It adds more depth and a silky texture to the casserole.
For a lighter option, use canned tuna in water to reduce fat while still keeping the dish flavorful.

    How to store

Keep leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
