Apple chips are the perfect snack for kids. My son loves them - he just can’t get enough!  Once I figured how easy they were to make in the air fryer, there’s just no going back to the store-bought version.  They’re a hit with my little one and will be with yours too.

    The Perfect Healthy Snack

    • Air fryer apple chips are cheap to make! Apples are readily available and very inexpensive.
    • These apple chips are fresh, nutritious and delicious. No additional ingredients needed.
    • Air fryer apple chips only take about 20 minutes to cook.
    • It’s a great healthy snack for the whole family, especially for kids!

    Ingredients And Equipment

One medium-size Fuji apple (or variety of choice)

Mandoline slicer: I trust your knife skills, but I highly recommend a mandoline. You want the apple slices to be the same thickness, so they cook evenly and are done at the same time.

Trivet: This helps to hold the apple slices down and prevents them from flying into the air fryer’s fan. It also helps the apple chips cook evenly. I use a simple one that came with my instant pot.

Air Fryer: I have a  Phillips XXL analog air fryer. This has a basket capacity of 3 lb/4 qt.

    Recipe Notes

Apple - One apple is perfect for this recipe. If you choose to air fry a couple of apples, I recommend doing them in batches. There is no need to peel or core the apple. Leaving the core will give you whole apple slices. Once the chips are air fried, you can de-seed them and easily eat around the core.

Mandoline - I found slicing the apples to ⅛” to be the best thickness to air fry. Use a safety guard holder to guide the apple when slicing it. Mandolines are very sharp and can be crazy dangerous when slicing food quickly. I know, I’ve nicked myself a few times!

    Air Frying Instructions-

Grid with pictures, how to make apple chips. First grid with mandoline and apple. Second grid with apple slices on cutting board. Third grid with apples in air fryer basket. Fourth grid with trivet on top of apples.
    1. Add the apple slices in a single layer into the air fryer basket. The slices will overlap, but it’s okay. Put the trivet on top of the apple slices. Air Fry for 10 minutes.
    2. After 10 minutes, most of the apple slices will dry up a bit. You can then move the apple slices around the basket so they will not overlap.
    3. Air fry for an additional 2 minutes and check again. Turn them over and space them out as needed, take out the pieces that are light medium brown in color.
    4.  Continue air frying the chips, check on them every 2 minutes until the whole batch is done.

Air frying Time - Total air fry time should be around 18-20 minutes for a whole apple. If you have a smaller air fryer basket, additional time may be needed.

Temperature - Set your Air Fryer to 300 degrees F. and make sure to preheat it.

Apple chips - When the chips are done, they will have an even light-medium brown color. They will be pliable and “floppy” when you take them out, but will dry out and crisp up when they cool. If they are pale yellow and soft, wet to touch, then add an additional 1-2 minutes.

Apple chips 2 side by side comparison uncooked versus cooked.
The chip on the left needs about 2 more minutes. The chip on the right is perfectly air fried.

    Tips and Tricks

    • To keep the chips crispy, make sure to take them out of the air fryer basket as soon as they’re done. This prevents the chips from steaming in the basket.
    • Keep a careful watch of the chips at the 16 minute mark. Just like with frying food in oil,  you will need to take out the pieces that are done to prevent overcooking. Smaller pieces will cook faster.
    • Place cooked apple chips on a plate in a single layer until ready to eat.
    • These are best eaten immediately. They will turn soft if you try to store them in a closed container.
