Why make homemade taquitos in air fryer

    • Budget-friendly meal
    • Healthy alternative: Air frying offers a much healthier alternative to traditional frying, and these taquitos are both crispy and delicious.
    • Quick & Easy: Ready in just 30 minutes!
    • Convenient: Make them in bulk, freeze, and reheat in the air fryer for a hassle-free meal or snack.

    Ingredients for air fryer taquitos

Ingredients on a table. Tortillas, cheese in a bowl, ground beef with seasoning in a bowl.

Ground Beef: I use 80/20 ground beef for the best balance of flavor and texture. If you prefer a leaner option, be aware it may result in a drier texture.

Seasoning: A simple homemade blend of oregano, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper brings the perfect flavor.

Cheese: I use a Mexican cheese blend, but feel free to substitute with Colby Jack, Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Pepper Jack for variety.

Tortillas: A corn-flour blend is ideal for easier rolling, but flour tortillas work perfectly as well.

    Toothpicks:
Essential for keeping the taquitos securely rolled during air frying.

    Equipment

Air Fryer: I use a  Phillips XXL analog air fryer with a 6-portion food capacity.

Preheat: Preheat the air fryer to 350°F for 5-10 minutes.

Prepare the Filling: Season the ground beef with a blend of oregano, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

    Assemble the Taquitos:

    • Roll the tortilla tightly around the filling and secure it with a toothpick.
    • Spoon the filling onto the edge of each tortilla (note: the meat will shrink slightly as it cooks).
    • Add shredded cheese on top of the meat.

Prepare for Cooking: Lightly spray the taquitos with oil to ensure even crisping.

Cook the Taquitos: Place the taquitos, toothpick side down, in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Air fry for about 8 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

How long to air fry taquitos ?

These air fryer beef taquitos typically take about 8 minutes to cook through. Cooking Times may vary depending on the brand and size of your air fryer. Start checking at the 7-8 minute mark to ensure they’re golden brown and crispy. If needed, add an extra minute or two for desired crispiness.

Tips for Crispy Homemade Taquitos in the Air Fryer

    • Cook in a single layer:  Cook in batches to avoid overcrowding, ensuring even crisping. For my air fryer, I cooked 14 taquitos in two batches.
    • Preparation: Always start with a clean air fryer basket and tray for the best results and easier cleanup.
    • Choose the Right Tortilla: Avoid 100% corn tortillas—they can be too dry and prone to breaking. A corn-and-flour blend offers better flexibility. Flour tortillas are even easier to roll and work perfectly.
    • Prepping the Filling: There’s no need to sauté the filling beforehand. Skipping this step saves time without compromising taste or texture.
    • Adjust Air Frying Time: Air fry until the tortillas are crispy all the way through. Cooking times can vary based on the brand and size of your air fryer. Start checking at 7-8 minutes and add time as needed.
    • Use Oil Spray: For an extra-crispy texture, evenly coat the tortillas with oil spray before cooking.

Freeze for up to 1-2 months in an airtight freezer bag.

To reheat leftovers, preheat the air fryer at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 to 10 minutes and air fry for about 6 to 7 minutes, until warmed through.
